Abortion: The Choice
While abortion will no doubt polarize our society for the foreseeable future, students can learn a great deal from the circumstances, anxieties, and life goals that surround the decision to end a pregnancy. This program presents a poignant and profoundly honest look at that decision through intimate discussions with young British women. Cheryl imagines other choices she might have made if her ex-boyfriend had remained with her. Carmel shares her college and career plans, insisting that she’s not ready to bring a child into the world. Hannah describes undergoing a spiritual crisis, while Margaret’s sense of relief contrasts sharply with Varria’s feelings of grief and shame. An abortion counselor also shares insights. (59 minutes)

Abortion and Divorce in Western Law
All laws tell stories, says Harvard law professor Mary Ann Glendon—stories about who we are, where we came from, where we are going, and what we value. Can Americans learn something from the abortion and divorce laws of other countries? Glendon says we have a lot to learn, and that it may surprise us. Glendon, whose field is comparative law, found her own assumptions challenged when she started the research for her prize-winning book, Abortion and Divorce in Western Law, which contrasts the legal practices of Europe and America as they bear on the difficult choices of these controversial issues. In this program with Bill Moyers, Glendon talks about family issues on both sides of the Atlantic. (30 minutes)

The Abortion War: Thirty Years After Roe Vs. Wade
In the years since the U.S. Supreme Court’s legalization of abortion, the political scene has changed dramatically enough to threaten this landmark decision. On the 30th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, this ABC News program surveys the current landscape of opinion and political alignment, examining the shift of momentum concerning abortion rights. Correspondent Dave Marash reports from Minnesota, while anchor Chris Bury discusses the issue with a panel of women who hold disparate views on abortion rights. (22 minutes)

A Choice for Life: The Decision-Making Process in High-Risk Pregnancies
Medical technology bestows a diagnostic power with thorny consequences: depending on what the test results reveal, parents and doctors can decide whether or not to let a pregnancy run its course. By following three couples dealing with high-risk pregnancies at a hospital in France, this program gets inside the complex decision-making process used by doctors and obstetric specialists, including how they present their recommendations to the parents with whom the decision ultimately rests. With its access to behind-the-scenes staff meetings and private doctor/patient dialogues, this case study is an excellent resource for health care professionals and medical counseling staff alike. Not available in French-speaking Canada. (50 minutes)
