Asia's Growing Tigers(22 minutes)
In Malaysia, the lucrative palm oil business is stirring global controversy. Vietnam has a burgeoning tourism industry—and is under pressure not to
develop it in the manner of neighboring Thailand. This program examines those issues as it traverses both countries, illuminating the balancing act between
development, environmental stewardship, and the rights of indigenous peoples. Nguyen Quy Phuong describes his challenges as deputy director of Vietnam’s
tourism ministry. Peter Ryder, CEO of Indochina Capital, asserts that tourism has far less impact than manufacturing and agribusiness while James Fahn of the
Internews’ Earth Journalism Network disagrees. Palm oil industry leaders and opponents are also featured. Part of the series Develop or Die? Sustainable
Growth on Asia’s Terms.

A Global Language(26 minutes)
With the whole world now interconnected, speaking English is commonly seen as a fast track to a good future. Students in Beijing spend Friday evenings
practicing the lingo at “English corners,” and employees of a Bangalore call center work on neutralizing their Indian accents. But in many countries there’s
concern about a growing divide between those who speak English—a well-off, Europeanized middle class—and those who don’t. Not only are socioeconomic
barriers erected by its use, but the infiltration of English, some feel, weakens their cultural identity. This program documents the unparalleled success of
English while challenging viewers to consider the downside of its spread. Produced by the Open University. Part 2 of the series Worlds of English.

Fighting the Tide: Developing Nations and Globalization(26 minutes)
This program contrasts indigenous, community-based culture with market economics driven by multinational corporations. The film assesses the growing conflict
between Burlington Resources, an American oil company licensed to prospect in regions of Ecuador, and the self-sufficient Achuar people of that country, who
believe the oil industry will destroy their environment and nonmaterialistic way of life. Underscoring the Ecuadorian government’s tendency to accommodate U.S.
interests, the video portrays a country divided by incompatible definitions of wealth and happiness.

Globalization: Winners and Losers(42 minutes)
How is business without borders really affecting the world? As Sabeer Bhatia, inventor of Hotmail; Narayan Murthy, founder of Infosys; and other industry
leaders attest, globalization has raised the standard of living in developing economies through high-tech opportunities, foreign investment, and debt relief.
However, Harvard’s Jeffrey Sachs and other experts point out that the world market is being exploited through shortsightedness, including the aggressive
deployment of genetically modified crops, environmental negligence, and the abuse of NAFTA. This program—produced in the aftermath of the WTO protests in
Seattle—addresses the pros and cons of doing business in the global marketplace.
